This learning unit covers the procedure for creating how to make graph or charts. After completion of this learning unit You will be able to describe different types of Charts / Graphs and to describe the procedure of creating and modifying these charts and their elements and also using of Sparkline's in Excel.

Remember: Charts are (called graphs in math class) visual representations of worksheet data.

Chart/Graphs and their Use in Excel

A chart is a tool that is used in Excel to present data graphically. A chart, also called a graph, is a graphical representation of data, in which the data is represented by symbols, such as bars in a bar chart, lines in a line chart, or slices in a pie chart. A chart can represent numeric. Data, functions or some kinds of qualitative structure and provides different information. These are many types of chart / Graphs used in Excel. In next article we learn How to make a Pie chart in excel.

A chart is a visual representation of data. By using elements such as columns, or lines a chart displays series of numeric data in a graphical format.

Create a Chart in Excel: Chart/Graph type in Excel

MS Excel has different types of charts as shown in the picture below.

Identifying the Elements of a Chart

A chart consists of different parts. These are:

Create a Chart/Graph Title in Excel

A chart Title describes what the chart is illustrating.

Vertical Axis

The vertical axis is also known as the y axis. It is the vertical part of the chart. IN the above picture, a column chart the vertical axis measures the height or value of the columns, so it is also called the value axis. However, in a bar chart, the horizontal axis would be the value axis.

Horizontal Axis

The horizontal axis is also known as the x axis. It is the horizontal part of the chart. In the above picture, the horizontal axis identifies the categories in the chart, so it is called the category axis. However, in a bar chart, the vertical axis would be the category axis.

Data Series

The data series consists of related data points in a chart. If there are multiple data series in the chart, each will have a different color or style. Pie charts can only have one data series. In the above picture, the green columns represent the Romance data series.

Legend

The legend identifies which data series represents through which color. For many charts it is necessary, but for some charts it may not be necessary and can be deleted. In the above picture, the legend allows viewers to identify the different book genres in the chart.
